Originating from the Baule carving tradition of Côte d’Ivoire, this hand-carved wooden mask features an elongated face, a striking composition of black, ochre, red and deep blue pigment.
Baule masking traditions are closely connected with community performance, ceremony and ideas surrounding beauty, social order and the relationship between the human and spiritual worlds. The sculptural proportions and graphic use of color give this collected piece a distinctly contemporary presence while reflecting a longstanding West African carving tradition.
Note: Natural variations, surface wear and pigment irregularities are inherent to the character of this collected piece.
